Breast Augmentation Q & A

What is breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation involves using breast implants or fat from your own body (called fat transfer breast augmentation) to increase the size of your breasts or restore the volume of your breasts after weight loss or pregnancy to achieve a rounder, fuller shape.

Breast augmentation may only partially correct drooping or sagging breasts. A breast lift is often performed along with augmentation for optimal results.

Implants may also be used during reconstructive surgery following a mastectomy.

Our cosmetic surgeons are widely experienced in the latest implant designs and techniques and can create a very natural look during this outpatient surgery.

Types of breast implants include:

Saline breast implants - These implants are filled with saline or sterile salt water. They offer a uniform shape and feel.

Silicone breast implants – These implants are filled with a silicone gel that feels like natural breast tissue. This type of implant is FDA-approved for women aged 22 and older.

Fat transfer augmentation – This procedure involves harvesting fat from other parts of the body and injecting it into the breasts. This is an option for women who seek only a minimal increase in breast size.

The type of implant that is best for you will be decided upon in consultation with your surgeon.

You are a good candidate for breast augmentation surgery if:

    • You are in good physical shape and aren’t
    • pregnant or breastfeeding
    • Your breasts are fully developed
    • You are not satisfied with the size, shape or volume of your breasts
    • Your breasts are asymmetrical
    • You have realistic expectations

What to expect

During a thorough consultation, your physician will perform a physical exam, take a full medical history, ask you about medications you may be taking and any conditions you currently have, take photographs, and discuss your expectations for the surgery. In addition, you may ask your physician any questions and discuss concerns you may have about breast augmentation at this time. Together, you will develop a treatment plan that’s tailored to your individual needs and desires.
